Overview
God’s eternal existence before and beyond creation
Before the most ancient and immovable parts of creation existed, God already was. He is not merely older than the world; He is God “from everlasting to everlasting.”
What Makes This Verse Confusing?
The verse speaks of mountains as if they had a birth. This is not saying mountains are living creatures; it is a reverent way of describing creation as something brought forth by God. Even what seems most ancient, solid, and permanent in the created order had a beginning under His hand.
The text uses birth-language for nonliving creation without pausing to explain the figure. It assumes the connection between God’s creative power and the bringing forth of the created world.
This makes the contrast sharper: mountains feel ancient to mankind, but to God they are newborn things. The verse humbles creation beneath the eternal Creator.
Theological Insights
God is eternal and uncreated; He exists before creation and reigns beyond it.
This gives believers a firm refuge: life is brief and unstable, but the God we trust is not fragile, temporary, or dependent on anything He has made.

to twist: give birth — : give_birth 1) to twist, whirl, dance, writhe, fear, tremble, travail, be in anguish, be pained 1a) (Qal) 1a1) to dance 1a2) to twist, writhe 1a3) to whirl, whirl about 1b) (Polel) 1b1) to dance 1b2) to writhe (in travail with), bear, bring forth 1b3) to wait anxiously 1c) (Pulal) 1c1) to be made to writhe, be made to bear 1c2) to be brought forth 1d) (Hophal) to be born 1e) (Hithpolel) 1e1) whir…
This word can carry the idea of labor or bringing forth, which strengthens the birth imagery in the verse. Creation is pictured as something God brings into being, not something that exists alongside Him.
world
This word highlights the ordered, inhabited world, not merely raw ground. The verse therefore includes the world as the place of human life and history, all of which stands under God’s eternal prior existence.
forever: enduring — : enduring/eternal 1) long duration, antiquity, futurity, for ever, ever, everlasting, evermore, perpetual, old, ancient, world 1a) ancient time, long time (of past) 1b) (of future) 1b1) for ever, always 1b2) continuous existence, perpetual 1b3) everlasting, indefinite or unending future, eternity
The repeated idea of “everlasting” pushes the reader beyond measured time. God is not confined within the timeline of creation; He is God before it and after it.
