Overview
The deadly end of refusing wisdom
This verse explains why Wisdom’s warnings are so urgent: the simple are not safe in their simplicity, and fools are not safe in their ease. Turning away from God’s instruction and resting comfortably in folly both lead to destruction.
What Makes This Verse Confusing?
“Backsliding” here is not merely a believer having a moment of weakness. The word carries the idea of turning away, refusing, or being faithless toward wisdom’s call. The “simple” in Proverbs are not hardened mockers yet; they are morally unformed, easily led, and open to influence. The shock is that even this seemingly passive condition can become deadly when it responds to God’s wisdom by drifting away instead of listening.
The verse does not define “simple,” and “backsliding” can sound like a later theological term for a temporary spiritual lapse. In Proverbs, however, “simple” names a specific wisdom category: the naïve and uncommitted, not merely the unintelligent.
This makes the warning sharper: destruction does not require open hatred of God at first. A person can perish by remaining teachable to the wrong voices and unresponsive to Wisdom’s voice.
Theological Insights
Indifference to God’s wisdom is not neutral; it is spiritually dangerous.
Do not measure your spiritual condition only by outward crisis or comfort. Ask whether your heart is listening when God speaks.
Original Language
faithlessness — turning away, turning back, apostasy, backsliding
This word gives “backsliding” the force of a turning away or faithless refusal. The simple are destroyed not because they lacked access to wisdom, but because they turned from the wisdom crying out to them.
simple — adj simple, foolish, open-minded
“Simple” in Proverbs describes the naïve and morally uncommitted. This matters because the verse warns that remaining undecided before God’s wisdom is itself perilous.
ease — quietness, ease, prosperity Aramaic equivalent: she.le.vah (שְׁלֵוָה "ease" H7963)
The word for “ease” can refer to quietness or security, but here it is attached to fools. The issue is not rest itself, but complacent security that dulls the soul to warning.

How This Applies Today
This verse calls believers to beware of spiritual drift and comfortable folly. The soul is not safe merely because life feels calm.
- →Bring areas of complacency before the Lord and ask where you have stopped listening to His wisdom.
- →Do not delay obedience because consequences are not yet visible.
- Where am I mistaking comfort for God’s approval?
- Am I simple and teachable before the LORD, or simple and easily led away from Him?
