“Then will they call on me, but I will not answer. They will seek me diligently, but they will not find me;”

Overview
The danger of refusing wisdom until the day of calamity.
Wisdom warns that there comes a point when people who repeatedly rejected her counsel will cry out in distress, but the opportunity they despised will not be available on their terms. This is not God being cruel; it is the sober fruit of hardened refusal.
What Makes This Verse Confusing?
In Proverbs 1, the speaker is Wisdom personified, calling aloud in the streets and pleading with the simple, scoffers, and fools to turn at her rebuke. The “me” in this verse is Wisdom’s voice, yet because true wisdom comes from the fear of the LORD, rejecting Wisdom is ultimately rejecting God’s instruction. The refusal to answer is judicial: after Wisdom has called and been refused, the later cry comes from panic, not repentance.
The verse does not restate the speaker inside verse 28 itself. The identity of “me” must be carried over from Proverbs 1:20-27, where Wisdom has been speaking.
This keeps the verse from being read as a denial of God’s mercy to the humble repentant. The issue is not sincere seekers being turned away, but those who despised God’s wisdom while it was calling and then sought rescue only after consequence arrived.
Theological Insights
God’s wisdom must be received when it calls; delayed obedience can become hardened rebellion.
When the Lord convicts, warns, or instructs through His Word, the faithful response is immediate humility, not postponement until consequences force desperation.
Original Language
to seek — 1) to seek, seek early or earnestly, look early or diligently for 1a) (Qal) to look for diligently, seek 1b) (Piel) to seek, seek early
The verb for “seek diligently” carries the idea of earnest, eager seeking. The tragedy is that their intensity is real, but it comes after long refusal. Proverbs is exposing not a lack of effort, but a fatal delay in submission.

How This Applies Today
This verse calls believers to take God’s correction seriously before crisis comes. It is a warning against treating repentance as something to save for later.
- →Respond promptly to any clear correction God has already given through Scripture.
- Is there an area where Wisdom has been calling, but I have been postponing obedience?
Key Takeaway
The time to seek wisdom is when she calls, not after her warnings have been despised.
Urgent cries in calamity cannot replace humble obedience in season.“
