“For though we walk in the flesh, we don’t wage war according to the flesh;”

Overview
Spiritual conflict must not be fought by merely human means.
Paul acknowledges that he lives in an ordinary human body, but he refuses to conduct his ministry battles according to sinful, worldly, self-reliant methods. The servant of Christ may be physically weak, but the warfare is spiritual.
What Makes This Verse Confusing?
Here “flesh” does not mean Paul is living sinfully. It means he is living in mortal human weakness — in a real body, with human limitations, vulnerability, and outward unimpressiveness. Paul is not denying his humanity; he is denying that his humanity governs the way he fights for the gospel.
The same word “flesh” can refer in Scripture either to human bodily existence or to sinful human nature, and this verse uses it in contrast with “according to the flesh” without defining the distinction inside the verse itself.
This keeps the verse from being misread as Paul confessing carnality. He is saying, “Yes, I am human and weak — but my weapons, motives, and methods are not merely human.”
Cultural & Historical Context
The Corinthian church, where some questioned Paul’s authority because his bodily presence seemed weak and his manner lacked the impressive force they expected from a spiritual leader.
In this section, Paul is defending the Christ-given authority of his apostleship against accusations that judged him by outward appearance and human standards.
- ✦Public speakers and leaders were often evaluated by visible confidence, rhetoric, presence, and social power. Paul refuses to let the gospel be measured by those fleshly standards.
Theological Insights
God’s servants may live in human weakness, but God’s work is not accomplished by fleshly power.
Believers should not confuse visible strength, charisma, or forcefulness with spiritual authority. The Lord’s battles must be fought in the Lord’s way.

flesh — σάρξ , σαρκός, ἡ [in LXX chiefly for בָּשָׂר ;] flesh ; __1. as in cl. generally, __(a) prop., of the soft substance of the animal body: 1Co.15:39 , 2Co.12:7 , Gal.6:13 , al.; σ. καὶ αἷμα, 1Co.5:50; σ. καὶ ὀστέα, Luk.24:39; pl., of the flesh of many or parts of the flesh of one (cl.), Rev.17:16 19:18 ; φαγεῖν, Re, ll. with (cf. κατεσθίειν, 4Ki.9:36 , al., and βιβρώσκειν, frequently in l.); metapho…
The repeated use of “flesh” creates the key contrast: Paul is “in” the flesh as a mortal man, but he does not fight “according to” the flesh as his governing principle. The same word carries two related but distinct senses in the verse.
according to — κατά (bef. a vowel κατ᾽, καθ᾽; on the frequently neglect of elision, see Tdf., Pr. , 95; WH, App. , 146a), prep. with genitive, accusative, down, downwards . __I. C. genitive (WM, §47, k; Bl., §42, 2). __1. C. genitive of thing(s), in local sense; __(a) down, down from : Mat.8:32 , Mrk.5:13 , Luk.8:33 , 1Co.11:4 ; __(b) throughout (late usage; Bl, l.with): κ. ὅλης κ.τ.λ., Luk.4:14 23:5 , Act.9:31…
“According to” points to standard, pattern, or rule. Paul is not saying he has no human involvement in ministry; he is saying human nature is not the measure or method by which he wages this battle.
to battle — στρατεύω and depon., -ομαι, so always in NT (στρατός, an encamped army), [in LXX for מההּ hith., יָצָא, צָבָא; metaphorically, 4Ma.9:23 ;] used of the general, to make war, do battle, and (chiefly) of the soldiers serving under him, to serve as a soldier : Luk.3:14 , 1Co.9:7 , 2Ti.2:4 . Metaphorical (cf. MM, ii, xxiii), of spiritual conflict, to war, make war : 2Co.10:3 , 1Ti.1:18 , Jas.4:1 , 1Pe.…
The verb for “wage war” shows Paul is not describing a mild disagreement but a real conflict. Gospel ministry involves battle — yet a battle whose weapons must match God’s kingdom, not the world’s methods.

How This Applies Today
This verse calls believers to examine not only whether they are fighting for what is true, but how they are fighting. A holy cause must not be pursued with fleshly weapons.
- →When facing conflict, refuse methods rooted in pride, manipulation, revenge, image-management, or intimidation.
- →Ask whether your response is being governed by the weakness and wisdom of the cross or by the instincts of the flesh.
- Where am I tempted to fight a spiritual battle with merely human weapons?
